My Editing Process and Style

How It Works
  • Client completes interest form or questionnaire

  • I perform a FREE sample edit

  • I provide a quote for the level of editing for your needs and budget

  • We nail down the details of the project and rate in a contract

  • Invoices are paid either in full or half at the start of the project and half at the end, per the client’s preference

  • Edit is performed and delivered, along with any additional materials included in the edit

  • Client reviews the edit and follows up as needed

  • I do a second pass after client revision, if included in your edit

My Editing Philosophy

Editing is an investment of an author’s money and editor’s time for the shared goal of making the manuscript better. As such, I believe it is a collaborative process that relies upon the following:

  • Open communication: My authors are welcome to air questions or concerns at any time in the editing process. I am available to all of my authors via email. Though I work in the evenings and weekends, I never expect my authors to respond outside their own working hours.

  • Flexibility: As is true for many authors, my editing business is a second job. Because many jobs are booked months or weeks in advance, flexibility is something that I require so that I can balance my full-time editing job, editing business, and personal life. That being said, I work hard to complete every edit within the timeline and will never return an edit late without an agreed upon extension.

  • Focus on the reader: I view every edit I make through the lens of the reader, aiming for clarity and readability in a manuscript. I will never override an author’s voice to put in my own.

  • Author ownership: This is your book, so you always get the final say. Each edit I make is merely a suggestion based on my opinion and expertise, but if a change doesn’t feel right to you, then stay true to your vision for your story.

  • Tailor-made edits: I approach each edit from a different perspective based on the author’s goals and where the manuscript is. I try to get a wide-angle view of the book before I start an edit so that my suggestions align with the author’s goals.

  • Working together, not against: My ideal edit is one in which the author and I can go back and forth with idea generation and development of the story (depending on the level of edit). In every edit, be assured I am invested in your story just as you are! Instead of authors feeling like my edits are going against them, I view editing as working together to fix a problem in the story.
